Carrageen

Carrageenan (407) is a gelling and thickening agent in food that is obtained from algae. In the food industry, carrageenan is used as a gelling agent for dietary products and in meat products (e.g. sausages). It is used as a thickening agent in jams, baby food, dairy products, milkshakes, ice cream and desserts. Carrageenan can also be used to remove cloudiness from wine. Carrageenan is also used in the cosmetics industry (toothpaste). According to the European Eco-Regulation, carrageenan is approved for organic food.
