Carrageenan (407) is a gelling and thickening agent in foods, which is obtained from algae. In the food industry, carrageenan is used as a gelling agent for diet products and in meat products (e.g. sausage). As a thickening agent, carrageenan is used in jams, baby food, dairy products, milkshakes, ice cream and desserts. Carrageenan can also be used to remove turbidity in wines. Carrageenan is also used in the cosmetics industry (toothpaste). According to the European organic regulation, carrageenan is approved for organic food.
