Carrageenan (407) is a gelling and thickening agents in foods, which is obtained on the basis of algae. In the food industry Carrageenan is used as a gelling agent for diet products and meat products (for example, sausage). As thickener carrageenan is used in jams, baby food, dairy products, milk shakes, ice cream and desserts. With the help of carrageenan opacities also can be eliminated in wines. Carrageenan is also used in the cosmetics industry (toothpaste). According to the European organic regulation carrageenan for organic food is allowed.
